Using Digital Tools to Strengthen Proficiency Testing Programs: Lessons from Rwanda

Date: February 05, 2026

Proficiency Testing (PT) is a core component of laboratory quality systems, ensuring accurate and reliable diagnostic results across laboratory networks. To strengthen PT programs, countries are adopting digital tools such as Electronic Proficiency Testing (ePT) tool to improve the way PT data are collected, reviewed, and used for quality improvement.

In many settings, PT programs begin with paper-based data collection and manual entry of participant responses, followed by lengthy evaluation and report generation. While basic response tracking is possible, only a limited set of indicators can be assessed, constraining program impact. These processes can take months, delay corrective actions, and require significant labor and resources, resulting in delayed feedback, limited visibility into performance trends, and missed opportunities for timely quality improvement.

ePT is a web-based application designed to modernize PT data management. It enables real-time monitoring of participation and performance, faster feedback to laboratories, automated workflows, and data dashboards that support informed decision-making and targeted quality improvement actions.

This RTCQI CoP webinar will introduce ePT as a digital solution that supports country-led quality improvement and sustainability. CDC will provide an overview of the platform and implementation considerations, followed by a country experience from Rwanda sharing lessons learned and practical insights. The session will conclude with a facilitated peer exchange focused on ePT implementation, challenges, and strategies for scale-up across countries.
