Innovative Approaches for Improving the Accuracy and Reliability of HIV Rapid Testing

Rapid Test Continuous Quality Improvement

A comprehensive and data driven approach to ensure the quality of HIV testing in PEPFAR supported countries. The initiative is based on the Quality Assurance Cycle (QAC), a continuum of integrated planned activities that supports and promotes effective rapid HIV testing leading to accurate and reliable test results.

5 pillars of RTCQI

The Five Pillars of RTCQI

The foundational pillars of the Rapid Test Continuous Quality Improvement initiative

Policy Engagement

  • Provide a framework for quality testing
  • Develop and implement policy
  • Engage stakeholders & advocate for resource allocation

Strengthening Human Resources

  • Develop a competency-based training program and certify testers
  • Create a network of certified testers

Stepwise Process for Improving the Quality of HIV Rapid and Recency Testing (SPI-RRT)

  • Provide standards on quality assurance (QA) practices for HIV rapid and recency testing sites
  • Guide development of policies and procedures to address gaps identified at testing sites
  • Monitor quality compliance and certify testing sites

Uptake of the Standardized HTS Register and Proficiency Testing (PT) Program

  • Increase uptake of standardized HIV testing register
  • Increase uptake and coverage of PT programs
  • Analyze data for routine monitoring and corrective actions

Rapid Test Kit Lot Verification

  • Strengthen national capacity to implement verification of new kit lots & post market surveillance

Meet Our Quality Champions

The Quality Corps program is one of the innovative approaches in RTCQI which assists in strengthening the Community Point-of-Care Testing quality assurance network, while ensuring national coverage of HTS. The Q-corp officers or quality champions help to drive the implementation of quality assurance measures for HIV testing and to increase their uptake.

INTEGRATION OF RTCQI

The RTCQI initiative is continuing to expand beyond HIV rapid testing to multi-diseases and platforms. New innovations are being deployed to assure the quality of other point of care tests such as the rapid test for recent infection, urine-based ARV tests, point of care molecular HIV tests, TB-LAM and lateral flow CD4 tests. The QAC concept is also being integrated into more multifaceted testing platforms and assays.
